Three-Card Past, Present, Future

The classic three-card linear timeline reading the developmental momentum connecting where you have been, where you are, and where you are headed.

Overview of the Layout

The three-card spread is the backbone of daily reflective tarot. By laying three cards in a horizontal line, you establish a clear visual sentence: subject, verb, and object across time.

TEMPORAL CONTINUUM: LINEAR READING SENTENCE MOMENTUM FLOWS LEFT TO RIGHT 1 THE PAST Preceding Momentum Root Cause & History "Where you have been" Subject of the Sentence 2 THE PRESENT Active Dilemma Current Atmosphere & Focus "Where you stand now" Verb / Active Action 3 THE FUTURE Emerging Trajectory Natural Consequence "Where momentum leads" Object / Destination Observe gaze direction and elemental transitions between adjacent cards to complete the sentence.

✦ Physical Laying Sequence (Auslegeordnung)

  1. 1
Card 1 (The Past): Place on the left side of the table. Maps the root momentum and preceding conditions.
  2. 2
Card 2 (The Present): Place in the center. Serves as the active focal point, dilemma, or present energetic state.
  3. 3
Card 3 (The Future): Place on the right side. Reads as the direct consequence or trajectory generated by Cards 1 and 2.

Position Breakdown & Interpretive Roles

Detailed guide to each card position in the layout. Positions correlate directly with the diagram above.

1Position 1: The Past

The preceding influence or root cause that shaped the present situation.

2Position 2: The Present

The current energy, active dilemma, or dominant atmosphere right now.

3Position 3: The Future

The natural consequence or trajectory toward which the current momentum leads.

How to Read This Spread with the Codex Method

Do not read the three cards in isolation. Look for gaze direction: are the figures facing toward the future or looking back toward the past? Notice elemental shifts—does Fire transform into Water, or does Air sharpen into Earth?
